Canarian food
Canarian food. Simple but delicious. Not pretentious at all, and yet it will leave you longing for more. Everyone’s favourite! Something you can get at any local restaurant are the traditional papas arrugadas or “wrinkly potatoes”. Rather small types of potatoes boiled with the skin and covered in salt that we simply dip into a mojo picón, mojo verde, or aioli sauce. Don’t peel them!Stay tuned for more info on the three classical mojo souces.
When you visit Tenerife, try some specialities like “Rabbit al salmorejo” or “Chicken in garlic”. There is a well-known restaurant in Adeje that has been serving those dishes since 1988. The “Otelo” restaurant is the best place to taste the famous recipes. It is right next door to the start of the impressive Barranco del Infierno trekking trail in Adeje. The breathtaking view that the restaurant reveals will amaze you. I guarantee you will go for the view and stay for the food. I have been there many times and I can say that the food there is as tasty as it could get.
Both locals and tourists regularly go there for the “Chicken in garlic”. A classic in traditional Spanish cuisine with a Canarian twist. The spicy red mojo deep-fried chicken, a top-secret recipe that was given to the owner’s wife by a family friend, goes best with “papas arrugadas” complimented with mojo verde or mojo rojo. Don’t forget to order some salad with that to taste the freshness of the local harvest.
To make “Rabbit al salmorejo” you will need patience and dedication. First, we have to let it marinate in the salmorejo itself and later brown it and cook it in its sauce. A better idea is to just leave it to the pros at “Otelo” restaurant. Go, order and simply enjoy it completely! This dish could also be appreciated best with a salad and “wrinkly potatoes”. A very Spanish thing to do is to dip the bread in the salmorejo sauce. Try it!
Sunday is domingo familiar or family Sunday and you will probably see many Canarian families going for lunch at the same time you are having your coffee. Spanish people have lunch around 2 or 3 in the afternoon.
Taste the delicious star dishes at “Otelo” and you will have a story to tell to your friends and family. Allow yourself to be captured by Tenerife’s rich culinary heritage along with the local excellent wines. Immerse in the breathtaking view of Adeje. It is there for you to experience it! The restaurant is only 5 min. drive from Habitats Del Duque in Costa Adeje, Tenerife.
