“The Hole” El Bujero in Tamaimo

I had seen friends` pictures on Instagram of el Bujero (The Hole) before. Stunning, just incredible.Best Insta profile pic! I knew it would be me in those spectacular photos one day. The huge volcanic arch serves as a window to the Atlantic ocean and once you in the image, it looks like you’ve come to the end of the world. It opens up an amazing view of Los Gigantes, Puerto Santiago and even the island of La Gomera is on display.

After the extremely successful Ifonche trial, I was already feeling like a pro so naturally; I decided I should change now my Insta profile picture.

Lubi, my personal “mountain guide” had already done the hike a few times. Her instructions were to bring lots of water, apply sunscreen and wear a hat because there’s almost no shade throughout the hike.

Armed with an adventurous spirit, we arrived in Tamaimo around 10 am. We could feel the strong sun on our skins that Sunday morning, even though we could still see the Mount Teide peak covered in snow from a few weeks before.

Right from the beginning, I noticed this hike would not be like the last one. Ifonche was literally a walk in the park, but this was going to be a challenge. Once we started going up Guama mountain, it seemed like we would never make it to the top. Not long, but definitely an intense walk, that was. According to the locals, if you want to achieve glory, you have to reach the cross called “Cruz de los misioneros”. That’s what we did, and it was worth it. From the cross, we were presented with breathtaking panoramic views of the other two Canary Islands, La Palma and La Gomera, and El Teide mountain on the other side.

That was only the beginning of the trekking trail, though. We still had at least 5km before reaching the famous hole. The rest of the time we walked on top of the Guama mounntain. Not even one tree, just a few cactus. It’s a good thing I listened to Lubi, and I brought an extra bottle of water and a hat. There’s no shade, remember that. God, I missed Ifonche´s pine forest!

Somewhere in the middle, we almost got lost. Another group of friends we met earlier did. We first met them by the cross and then saw them again at the Hole where they said they had to ask someone to get on the right path.
Ah, the famous Hole. That perfect Instagram picture. I would do anything to feel like a real influencer just for a day. The reality surrounding me was different, though. Heat, sweat and another 2 km more to go. I am strong, I can make it and more importantly, how jealous of that photo my 200 followers would be! I had to keep going! There was no turning back!

The entrance is a bit hidden, almost like it doesn’t want to be found, but we did! And there it was, el Bujero in all its glory! Just another super steep piece between us. We made the last push and were finally there. Both sides of the Hole are open and we could appreciate the fantastic views in nearly all directions.

It was a photo shoot and after that, picnic time. Let’s not forget we had to walk back all the way we came! Tamaimo is about 25km away from Habitats Del Duque in Costa Adeje.
